HOUSTON - Mississippi Valley State (3-16, 1-4 SWAC) grinded out a four-set victory over Grambling State (6-14, 2-3) to earn its first conference win of the year on the final day of the SWAC West Volleyball Roundup.
Grambling State won every statistical category, as four Lady Tigers had 10 or more kills led by Talicia Lang's 11. Kevreion Ward, Chasity Nicks (16 digs) and Jaivienna Jones each posted 10. Diemend Richardson had 26 assists and nine digs. Erineka Mollere put up 26 digs.and Lang chipped in 15. L'Muriell Thrower had 14 assists and 12 digs.
The Devilettes got 15 kills and 18 digs from Taylor Selfridge, and Kalin Barnes put up 26 digs and 12 kills. Jaime Polk dished out 40 assists, and Joilyn Azore figured in on six blocks.
Mississippi Valley started set one with a 9-4 run, but Grambling took control with a 7-0 run. In what became a set of runs, MVSU prevailed thanks to a kill from Haley Buard and an attack error from Ward. After Grambling tied it by overcoming a 22-20 deficit with a 5-1 run, Mississippi Valley managed to turn away late charges by Grambling in the third set, and two Selfridge kills keyed a 5-1 run that staved off set point for the Devilettes and ultimately earned them the win.
