ITTA BENA – With high winds playing a major factor, the Delta Devils were unable to come up with the big plays to defeat the Hornets of Alabama State University. The Hornets weren't dominating in the contest, however with the wind at their backs during crucial moments, they were able to capitalize.
With a downpour threatening, the teams had to battle through the elements and hope the rain would hold off. When the final buzzer sounded, the rain began to fall in sheets.
Alabama State came up with several large plays to keep the contest out of Mississippi Valley's reach. There were only two touchdowns scored between the two teams during the game. ASU's came in the first quarter on a three-yard run by Darryl Pearson. Hunter Hanson tacked on the point after.
In the second, Hanson nailed the first of three field goals for the Hornets to extend the lead to 10-0. Mississippi fired back with a 29-yard field goal by Nicholas Jacquemin (5:15), making the score 10-3. With 1:00 remaining in the half, Hanson added a 40-yard field goal to increase the ASU lead to 13-3.
The only points for the third came on the foot of Hanson, as he nailed a 39-yard field goal. The field goal was also the final points by the Hornets.
In the fourth, Quinn McElfresh reached up and around to pull down a 19-yard reception from Jett Even. Jacquemin added the point after.
An interception late in the quarter by Alabama State's Ronnie Scott sealed the contest for the Hornets.
