HAMMOND, La. – The bats for the Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes started to ring loudly on Saturday when the team faced Coppin State, defeating them 7-3. In game two of the evening, MVSU was shutout 5-0 by the Salukis of Southern Illinois.
Game 1 – Mississippi Valley 7, Coppin State 3
After a slow start, both teams started to show signs of life. Mississippi Valley's three run fifth, on a homer by Deja Talton, got the wheels to turning. Coppin responded with a run of their own, however the Devilettes were stingy with hits and runs during the contest.
Andrea Elmore recorded the win for MVSU on the mound, pitched five innings. She only allowed two hits and one run, while recording two strikeouts. Chandler Ellis was credited with the save, pitching two innings.
Kailyn Dunn and Holly Brown each recorded three hits; Brown batted in two runners.
Mississippi Valley finished with seven runs on 12 hits and three errors.
Game 2 – Southern Illinois 5, Mississippi Valley 0
Mississippi Valley suffered their first shutout of the season at the hands of the Southern Illinois Salukis.
Rebekah Clinton recorded the loss on the mound for the Devilettes, dropping to 0-2 on the season. Clinton allowed four runs on six hits and four errors in five innings. Monica Rivera pitched for two innings allowed three hits and one run.
Mississippi Valley's defense held firm, as they competed for seven complete innings without an error.
