HAMMOND, La. – Mississippi Valley faced two tough teams in UT-Martin and the hosting Southeastern, in the final day of the 2017 Lion Classic. UT-Martin was able to seal the win in six innings, winning 8-0. Against Southeastern, Mississippi Valley succumbed 11-5.
Game 1 –UT-Martin 8, Mississippi Valley 0
The Devilettes featured three pitchers in the pitcher's circle; Monica Rivera, Shyanne Downing and Andrea Elmore. Rivera pitched for 3.2 innings, allowed three runs on six hits. Downing allowed two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Elmore allowed three runs and no hits.
Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings before a three-run inning by UTM changed the dynamics of the contest. Another two in the fifth and three in the six sealed the contest in six innings.
Game 2 – Southeastern Louisiana 11, Mississippi Valley 5
The Devilettes knocked the top of the first inning wide open with a five-run inning and holding the hosting Lady Lions to one run in the first, second and third. The fourth inning was an issue as Southeastern La. was able to lodge four runners across home plate.
Rebekah Clinton recorded the loss for Mississippi Valley in the pitcher's circle. She relinquished eight runs on nine hits in four innings. She also added three strikeouts to aid the Devilettes' defense.
MVSU will return home to reboot before heading to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to participate in the University of Southern Mississippi Tournament. On day one, February 17, MVSU will face Jacksonville State University at 1:00 pm.
Day two features a pair of familiar faces for the Devilettes as they will face Nicholls State University at 12:00 p.m. and Jacksonville State at 6:00 p.m. MVSU will wrap with the hosting University of Southern Mississippi on February 19 at 3:00 p.m.
