Hattiesburg, Miss. – (Softball) Mississippi Valley's softball team saw themselves down by double digits against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in the opening in inning; however, the Devilettes remained vigilant and pushed for a 14-7 finish.
A grand slam homer by JSU blasted a hole into MVSU's defense and was the largest contributing factor of the 10-runs allowed in the first inning.
The Gamecocks scored again in the second to extend their lead to 11-0. It was the top of the third, when the Devilettes started to chip away at the point deficit, scoring three runners. In the third inning, the Gamecocks pushed two additional runs to maintain control.
Undeterred, Mississippi Valley stepped into the batters' box in the fourth and scored four runs. After the top of the fourth, the contest slowed down significantly, with a lone runner crossing home plate for JSU in the sixth.
Monica Rivera was credited with the loss on the mound for the Devilettes, as she allowed five runs and four hits.
