ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes hosted the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University on a historic day for Mississippi Valley State University.
The court in the R. W. Harrision Complex was renamed Stribling-Harris Court prior to tipoff. Before a crowd including, many former Devilettes, the current team worked diligently. The scoreboard reflected a 68-60 loss however the score doesn't tell the full story.
In a battle of wills, Mississippi Valley demonstrated their ability to make baskets with ease. Defensively, MVSU completed the contest with 26 defensive rebounds and three blocks. Statistically, the Devilettes maintained a strong presence. There may have been an instance where the shots weren't falling but the team never gave up.
Fouls and free-throws secured the contest for the Lady Braves as Alexus Freeman scored six at the charity stripe leading to the final buzzer.
Everything was not lost as Ashley Beals put up another double-double, with 27-points, 20-rebounds. She also added three-assists, two steals and one block. Kristy Parker tallied 13-points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists, while Kenya Hailey added 11-points, five rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
The Devilettes will face the Southern University Lady Jaguars on Monday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Think Pink game. Fans wearing pink MVSU or pink breast cancer t-shirts will be admitted for $5.00.
