HOUSTON – (Women's Basketball) It was a gloomy day for a rematch between the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern and the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley. Due to the weather, the spectators were limited, however there were just enough for TSU to gain a 60-54 victory over MVSU.
At the conclusion of the first quarter, the score reflected the weather outside for the Devilettes as they trailed 20-10. With Head Coach Jessica Kern calling out various offensive and defensive stances, MVSU began to chip away at the point deficit.
Entering the locker room for halftime, Kenya Hailey paced the team with nine points and four rebounds, while Beals chipped in eight points, five rebounds.
In order to stay in the game, MVSU had to improve on their field goal attempts, as 22 points were left on the court. The charity stripe was friendly to the Devilettes this contest as they only missed four of their attempts, in the opening two quarters.
The Lady Tigers' defensive stance was to bury Beals to prevent her from scoring. Kristy Parker and Hailey stepped up, making big plays to keep MVSU in the ball game. Beals would not be denied the entire contest; she forced her way inside, to put up a double-double.
Beals paced the Devilettes with 16-points, 12-rebounds, two steals and one block; while Hailey added 15-points, eight-rebounds, two assists and one block.
The Devilettes will host the Lady Tigers of Jackson State on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 2:00 p.m.
