ITTA BENA – (Women's Basketball) With the Devilettes dressed in all black to celebrate the Mississippi Valley State blackout, MVSU hosted the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University. It was a hard-fought battle, yet a twisted three-pointer at the buzzer lifted JSU over Mississippi Valley, 63-60.
At the end of the first period, the Devilettes and the Lady Tigers were in a heated battle. With a score of 13-12, in favor of Jackson State, it was still anyone's game. Head Coach Jessica Kern called timeout to regroup and discuss strategy with her team.
Entering the locker room for halftime, Kenya Hailey paced the team with nine points and four rebounds, while Beals chipped in eight points, five rebounds. In the second, the Lady Tigers were able to outpace MVSU 13-9, taking a 26-21 lead into the locker room.
In the third, the Devilettes were able to bounce back with a vengeance, outscoring the Lady Tigers 18-13. Heading into the final ten minutes, the teams were battling for defensive positioning. In the fourth with mere seconds remaining on the clock, the game appeared to be heading into overtime. A quick timeout by Jackson advanced the ball down the court. On the inbound, JSU launched the ball up for a three. As the goal highlighted the end of regulation, the ball soared through the net.
Kenya Hailey paced the Devilettes with 17-points, nine rebounds, one steal, one assist and one steal. Kristy Parker chipped in 14-points, four rebounds and four assists. Ashley Beals, with early foul trouble, tallied 11-points and six rebounds.
The Devilettes will host the Lady Tigers of Grambling State on Monday, February 27, 2017, at 5:30 p.m.
