MONTGOMERY – (Women's Basketball) Mississippi Valley entered the contest against the Lady Hornets of Alabama State on a high note, after defeating the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A & M on Saturday. A late surge lifted ASU to a 71-57 win over MVSU.
The opening quarter was unsettling for Mississippi Valley as they were only able to amass eight points on the scoreboard, while allowing Alabama State to score 19. Shots weren't falling; therefore, the Lady Hornets were able to build a commanding lead early.
The second quarter was the polar opposite of the first as MVSU demonstrated to ASU why they were a force to be reckoned with and why you should never relax your guard. The Devilettes scored 20 points, while holding the Lady Hornets to a five-point quarter. After two complete, Mississippi held a 28-24 point lead heading into the locker room for halftime.
When a quarter (3rd) ends 23-20, both offenses were battling and implementing strategies discussed during halftime. With ten minutes remaining and a one-point difference, the contest belonged to either team. ASU was able to muster up the strength to rally past the Devilettes with mere minutes remaining on the scoreboard.
Ashley Beals finished with another double-double of 13-points, 12-rebounds. Kristy Parker paced the team with 17-points, while Kenya Hailey added 15.
The Devilettes will host Alcorn State University of Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m.
