LAFAYETTE, La. – The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes volleyball team were unable to overcome the hump to secure a victory in the University of Louisiana Lafayette tournament, dropping both games on day two. Facing the hosting Ragin' Cajuns, the Devilettes suffered a 3-0 loss and a 3-1 loss to the Colonels of Nicholls State.
Game One:
In the opening contest, ULL was able to secure the win in straight sets with scores of 25-14, 25-8 and 25-11.
With true grit, Mississippi Valley showed the opponents that being a young team wasn't a driving factor. The Devilettes showed true grit in the opening set, propelling the hosting institution to dig deep.
Statistically, Mississippi Valley finished with 15 kills, with five of those coming at the hands of Joilyn Azore and three from Kalin Barnes. Jaime Polk showed tenacity with 11 assists, while Jessica Bell recorded nine digs.
Game Two:
In their final contest of the tournament, MVSU came to life with a victory in one set. The Colonels were sure they would get a clean sweep, however the Devilettes proved to be too much in the third set. With four sets played the scored were 25-19, 25-10, 25-22 and 25-8.
The win margin was close in the third set but it sets a tone for the remainder of the season for the young Mississippi Valley team.
The 28 kills were the most MVSU recorded in a match over the weekend and shows the team concluded the tournament on a high note. The Devilettes also recorded nine aces, 28 assists and 77 digs.
Kalin Barnes finished leading the team in three categories, kills (15), digs (18) and three aces. Jaime Polk wrapped up the contest with 24 assists.
Haley Buard was named to the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic All-Tournament team.
