Delta Devils Fall to Alcorn, 77-63

ITTA BENA, Miss. - Saturday night's match-up against Alcorn State was the tale of "too much of anything can kill you."

Alcorn's senior, A.J. Mosby and sophomore, Maurice Howard combined made up for the Braves 75% shooting from the arc in the first half. With the Braves opening the contest on fire, the Delta Devils had to buckle down defensively to halt their offensive attack. In the final ten minutes of the opening half the Delta Devils defense began to shut down Mosby's long-range shots.

The Delta Devils were able to get second looks in the first, however they weren't able to capitalize and put points on the board. Factoring in Mosby and Howard combining for 32-points and the half was ended in the Braves favor of 42-29.

The second half was less shooting beyond the arc for Valley and more of attempts to score in the paint. This resulted in using more of the shot clock, making Alcorn play defense longer, and making buckets down low many of which came from second chance opportunities.

The defense still had work to do to contain Howard, who fouled out in the second half, and Mosby.

In the last 10 minutes of the game, Valley switched to a full court press which proved to be too much for the Braves as they started turning the ball over, which helped the Delta Devils put points on the board.

Emotions started to flare as Valley made a comeback, intensified by the crowd, and both teams traded fouls with Alcorn committing a technical foul.

Final score: 63-77 in favor of Alcorn. Dante Scott paced the Delta Devils with 16-points, six rebounds and four assists. Jordan Evans notched nine-points and two assists.
Mississippi Valley will be in action again at home, Monday, January 15, 2017 in the Harrison Complex against Southern with tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
