PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes shook off Saturday's contest against Texas Southern to push the Lady Panthers of Prairie View to the ropes. The contest wasn't decided until the final seconds, as PVAMU took the win 78-73.
After relinquishing the first basket of the contest to the Lady Panthers, Mississippi Valley responded with a layup at the hands of Makayla Bonner to tie the game. Worthy of a highlight reel, LaKendra Bassett stole the ball and placed a neat layup up on a fast break. At 7:30 the score was tied at two on a layup by Prairie View.
Bonner was sent to the free throw line at 6:45, where she landed both free-throws. Despite being neck-in-neck for most of the period, the Lady Panthers were able to pull ahead to end the quarter 21-14.
Despite being down entering the second, the Devilettes buckled down to play solid defense. Both teams were able to put up 19-points during the quarter, bringing the score to 42-35.
In the third, Mississippi Valley continue to heat up as they outpaced Prairie View 19-17. This 10-minute period truly served a battle down the stretch.
With 10-minutes remaining, MVSU trailed by five-points (59-54). Both teams scored 19 in the final ten, enabling the Lady Panthers to secure the victory.
Bassett stepped up for the Devilettes during the competition, notching 32-points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Bonner scored 15-points, six rebounds and one steal. Parker and Kenya Arnold tallied 13 and 10 points respectively. Arnold also added 12 rebounds to record a double-double.
Mississippi Valley returns home to host the Lady Tigers of Jackson State on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm.
