Devilettes defeat Prairie View in five sets; split first day at SWAC Roundup

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University split their Friday matches at the first day of the second Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Roundup.
 
At Alabama A&M University's Health and Wellness Center, the Devilettes won a thrilling five-set match over Prairie View A&M. Scores of the match were 18-25, 25-11, 27-25, 14-25, and 15-13.
 
Earlier in the day, they lost a four-set match to Arkansas–Pine Bluff by scores of 23-25, 26-24, 25-20, and 25-23.
 
In the win over Prairie View, Tyler Caliste knocked down a team-high 16 kills, followed by Taylor Selfridge's double-double performance of 14 kills and 11 digs.
 
Brooklyn Hudson also tallied a double-double for the Devilettes, handing out 40 assists to go along with 12 digs. Valley also got 13 digs apiece from Kiya Garza and Kalin Barnes, as well as 12 digs from Jessica Bell.
 
After a dominant win in set two, the Devilettes fell behind 9-4 in set three, but rallied back to tie the score at 11. The tie score was part of a 6-0 run by Valley, which included two kills by Caliste.
 
Later in the set, Prairie View had a 24-21 lead and were on the verge of victory before Valley ran off four consecutive points to take a 25-24 lead. Three points later, Selfridge ended the set with a kill and gave the Devilettes a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Against Arkansas–Pine Bluff, Selfridge had another double-double, knocking down 19 kills and recording 26 digs. Ariana Austin also had a double-double with 28 assists and 20 digs, while Bell led the defense with 29 digs.
 
The Devilettes return to action Saturday with matches against Southern and Texas Southern.
