MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University turned in another strong performance Thursday but fell 31-24 in overtime to Alabama State in the Hornets' Turkey Day Classic.
Valley quarterback Dejerric Bryant rushed for a game-high 114 yards, while Henry Isaiah Robinson rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Delta Devils, who finish the 2018 season with a record of 1-10.
Bryant also completed eight out of his 19 pass attempts for 67 yards, completing three passes to Booker Chambers, and two passes apiece to Steven McIntosh and Kelvin Lovett.
The Delta Devils and Hornets were tied at the end of the first and second quarters. Robinson scored each of his touchdowns in the first half, capping nine-play drives of 62 yards and 55 yards, respectively.
Valley took its first lead of the game in the third quarter when they took their second drive of the period 82 yards on 12 plays for touchdown. The Delta Devils capped the drive on a trick play when Chambers, a receiver, tossed a 10-yard pass to Stetson Moore for the touchdown.
Later in the quarter, Ruben Piraquive added a 26-yard field goal to stretch Valley's lead to 24-14.
Alabama State scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to erase the deficit. Hunter Hanson's 33-yard field goal with 1:56 left to play in regulation tied the game at 24-24.
The Hornets scored a touchdown and ensuing extra point on their first possession of overtime. ASU then forced a four-and-out on Valley's possession to claim victory.
Chambers finished the game with 73 yards rushing on seven attempts, and 22 yards receiving on his three catches. John Derrick Smith rushed for 12 times for 68 yards.
Defensively, Tadarius Davis had nine tackles to lead the Delta Devils. Bryant Jones had six tackles, including three for loss, with a seven-yard sack included in that total.
