PHOENIX – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University got off to a quick start but couldn't sustain the momentum Saturday in a well-fought game at Grand Canyon University.
Grand Canyon won the contest by a score of 85-64.
Dante Scott led Valley with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting to go along with four rebounds and three assists Saturday.
Valley freshman Gregory Holloway scored in double-figures for the first time as a collegian, pouring in 11 points for the visiting Delta Devils. Jordan Evans and Michael Green scored 10 points apiece for Valley.
Alessandro Lever led Grand Canyon (7-5) with a game-high 26 points.
The Delta Devils led by as many as nine points with 12:39 left to play in the first half, but a 15-0 run by Grand Canyon gave the Antelopes a 22-16 lead at the half's 6:33 mark.
Lorenzo Hunt scored six points for Valley, followed by four points apiece from Kaleb Allison and Gregory Jones-Rollins.
The Delta Devils shot 44.6 percent (25 of 56) from the field during the game, and shot 46.2 percent (6 of 13) from 3-point range. Grand Canyon shot 52 percent (30 of 58) from the field.
Valley will return to action Jan. 5 when they open Southwestern Athletic Conference play at Arkansas–Pine Bluff. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
