GRAMBLING, La. – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State traveled to Jackson, Mississippi, with a sweep of the Tigers of Jackson State for the season in mind.
The opening half was the all-in favor of the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State. MVSU came out blazing as they were able to secure dominance in landing baskets and pulling down rebounds. The second chance opportunities were for the Tigers early on. It was frustrating for the home team's crowd to see Mississippi Valley claw their way back into the contest.
It took poise and extreme focus for the Delta Devils to face down Grambling State on the court and in the stands, however after the first 20-minutes, MVSU held a 45-37 lead.
In the second half, the Tigers shifted their strategy and began to score more baskets. The lead enjoyed by the Delta Devils entering the break was shorten. It was an intense half, entering the final minutes and GSU surely added the pressure. Mississippi Valley was able to maintain their defense and depended on the offensive presence to carry them to victory.
With seconds remaining, Grambling began fouling, sending the Delta Devils to the charity stripe where they sunk basket after basket to secure the victory.
Despite a 37-34 advantage for the Tigers, Mississippi Valley was able to claim a 79-74 win over the reigning SWAC leaders.
Jordan Evans notched 29-points nine rebounds to pace the Delta Devils. Dante Scott pulled another double-double with 15-points, 13-rebounds, four assists and two steals.
MVSU will travel to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to face the Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, March 3rd. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
