Lethargic night for the Devilettes against Lady Bulldogs

ITTA BENA, Miss. --- The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley weren't as sharp as they usual and it reflected down the stretch of the Devilettes' home contest against the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A & M University. MVSU dropped the contest 57-49.

Every team has their off nights, and it just so happened that the Devilettes' night was against the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. Leading scorers Kristy Parker and LaKendra Bassett ended the night with only 23 combined points, and MaKayla Bonner shot 33.3 percent from the field in the loss. The Devilettes just couldn't get in a rhythm offensively nor defensively.

The first half was a slow and a low scoring one, that ended when Lauren McKee drove to the basket to take the Lady Bulldogs into halftime with a three-point lead (23-20). Alabama A & M also held the Devilettes' dynamic duo, Kristy Parker and LaKendra Bassett to only 7 points combined in the first half. Both the Devilettes and Lady Bulldogs shot poorly from the field in the first half, 28 percent and 32.1 percent respectively. MaKayla Bonner started sluggish but she led Mississippi Valley with eight points into the half.

The inexperience of the Lady Bulldogs was on display early as they turned the ball over numerous of times, took poor shots, and accrued bad fouls. As a result, Nigeria Jones fouled out in the fourth, ending her night with just five points.

In the shocking loss, LaKendra Bassett and MaKayla Bonner lead the Devilettes with 12 points each, Kristy Parker added 11, and Sydney Floyd ended with seven before fouling out of the game in the fourth quarter. Bassett was held to only four points through most of the game, but in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter she picked up eight more in the Devilettes quest for a comeback.

The Devilettes will have four days at home to regroup and revitalize before they leave for Lorman, Mississippi, to face Tia Sanders and the Lady Braves of Alcorn. The Lady Braves have run into a roadblock of their own with their usual hot offensive duo falling into a slump. After a loss to Grambling Monday night, the Lady Braves will be looking to snap their three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon, at home. Tip is set for 3 p.m.
