Devilettes Start Conference Play with Sweep of Lady Tigers

ITTA BENA (Softball) – After a washout on Friday, Saturday dawned clear and windy for the doubleheader between the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley and the Grambling State Lady Tigers. Game one was a nail bitter, as GSU rallied within one run before the Devilettes' defense shut them down. In game two, it was all Mississippi Valley as they cruised to a 7-2 victory.

Mississippi Valley 6, Grambling 5

Grambling State was able to score their first run in the top of the first. The Devilettes came out swinging in the bottom of the inning to score three runners. Dejanae Gage doubled to left center to score Jodeci Afoa-Tuia and Lexany Terrones.    Ikeyia Alexander reached first on an error by the GSU shortstop and Gage came home.

MVSU scored once in the second, when Terrones reached on an error by the shortstop and Kailyn Dunn scored. The Devilettes scored their final two runs in the third inning. Alexander scored on a wild pitch. Jaime Parmley singled to second to score Deshonte Smith.

The Lady Tigers scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and once in the seventh.

The Devilettes completed the contest with six runs on 10 hits and two errors.

Chandler Ellis recorded the win for Mississippi Valley, while Jezabelle Quintana is credited with the save.

Mississippi Valley 7, Grambling 2

In game two, the contest was completely in favor of the Devilettes. Winning by a solid 7-2 margin, Mississippi Valley clinched their victory early on.

In the opening inning, MVSU recorded four runs. They recorded their final three in the fifth. There was no need to score in the second through fourth innings and with the lead in the seventh, the Devilettes didn't have to bat in the final inning.

Afoa-Tuia's single to left field scored Torrones and Kennedy Lester. Lacy Wilburn nailed a double to centerfield and advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder, to score Afoa-Tuia and Sharia Cormier.

In the fifth, Gage's bat rang out as she doubled down the left line to score Torrones. A sacrifice fly by Alexander scored Miranda Sandoval. Wilburn stepped up and singled to left field to bring Gage home. GSU scored their two runs in the sixth inning, to wrap up all scoring.

MVSU tallied seven runs on nine hits and two errors. Alyssa Montes took the win for the Devilettes in the pitcher's circle.

Game three of the series will be made up at a later date. MVSU will take on Central Arkansas on March 20th in Itta Bena, Miss. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm.
