Devilettes fall to Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University saw their two-match winning streak snapped Tuesday after falling in straight sets at Mississippi College.

Scores of the match were 25-23, 25-17, and 25-16.

Tyler Caliste led the Devilettes with 10 kills, reaching double-figures in kills for the third consecutive match. Jamie Polk handed out 17 assists, and also led the team defensively with nine digs.

Jessica Bell tallied eight digs for Valley, followed by Caliste with seven digs.

Valley had identical hitting percentages of .214 (10 kills against four digs on 28 attempts) in each of the final two sets, but it was the first set which went down to the wire. The Devilettes appeared to be gaining momentum when they went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. Kills from Taylor Selfridge and Caliste book-ended four MC errors during the run.

The host Choctaws fought back to tie the set at 16, which was followed by the teams trading points almost in succession, with Valley stringing two points together to take a 22-21 lead.

MC again responded, this time with three consecutive points to set up set point at 24-22. A kill by Caliste pulled Valley to within one point, before the Choctaws took the set with a block for point 25.

Polk, Selfridge, Destini Banks, and Chardea Berthelot posted four kills apiece for the Devilettes (2-12). Jamie Boros led Mississippi College with 11 kills.

The Devilettes open Southwestern Athletic Conference play this weekend when they travel to Baton Rouge for the first of two conference roundups. Valley will face all five teams from the SWAC's West Division in three days, starting with Arkansas–Pine Bluff at 10 a.m. on Friday.
