ITTA BENA, Miss. (January 12, 2019) – Mississippi Valley State men's basketball snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 72-63 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday inside the Harrison HPER Complex. The duo of seniors Gregory Jones-Rollins and Jordan Evans combined to score 33 points helping the Delta Devils to their first conference win of the year.
The Delta Devils (3-13, 1-1) recorded a season-high 13 made three-pointers shooting 50 percent (13-26) from the field against the Bulldogs (2-15, 1-2). MVSU had three in double-figure scoring with a pair coming off the bench. The Delta Devils bench outscored the Bulldogs bench 51-34 and their defensive effort kept AAMU to only nine made field goals in the first half.
Jones-Rollins came out the gate with 10 points within the first 12 minutes of action. His stellar play had MVSU ahead 31-20, at the final media timeout of the first half. The Delta Devils made 10 of 18 three-pointers in the half with Jones-Rollins knocking down four of his five attempts. His final shot from downtown came right before the halftime buzzer and gave MVSU their largest lead of the evening, 42-26.
The Delta Devils double-digit lead was cut to single digits by the 16:09 mark and then an 11-2 run by the Bulldogs brought them to within a 50-47 margin with 13:32 left to play. Junior Michael Green ended the MVSU drought with back-to-back three-point shots igniting the home crowd. Then an offensive rebound and putback by senior Emmanuel Ejeh pushed the Delta Devil advantage to 58-47.
MVSU's bench came alive in the second half outscoring AAMU 29-15. Evans took over the scoring load for the Delta Devils with 11 points on three of five made field goals and four of seven made free-throws. Ejeh and Green both had eight points.
Evans finished with 17 points leading the Delta Devils at the free-throw line converting on four of seven attempts. Jones-Rollins made six of 10 field goals recording a season-high 16 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Green scored 11 points and both Ejeh and senior Dante Scott each had eight points.
Tre Todd led Alabama A&M with 21 points and Andre Kennedy had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
MVSU will host Alabama State on Monday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Harrison HPER Complex.
