Southern Earns Victory Over Delta Devils

BATON, ROUGE, La. (January 21, 2019) – Senior Jordan Evans registered his 11th double-digit scoring effort leading Mississippi Valley State men's basketball with 17 points in an 80-56, setback at Southern University, Monday night. Evans scored 13 first-half points as the Delta Devils battled from behind for most of the way.

The Delta Devils (3-16, 1-4) have dropped three in a row and are winless on the road in conference play. Junior Michael Evans was the other double-digit scorer for MVSU with 12 points making 3-of-7 three-pointers off the bench. Senior Gregory Jones-Rollins had eight points while junior Torico Simmons scored six and senior Dante Scott led with five rebounds.

MVSU led twice early on against the Jaguars. Evans hit a three-pointer for the first points of the game and then his jumper while drawing the foul and converting the free-throw put the Delta Devils in front, 6-5, at the 17:18 mark.

Then the Jaguars offense picked up with a 20-9 run and led by double-digits with 9:36 remaining in the first half. Southern shot 60-percent (17-28) from the field in the first half and made 7-of-10 three-point field goals. Evans was 4-for-5 from the field and made a pair of shots from beyond the arc, but MVSU struggled with only nine made first-half field goals shooting 39-percent (9-23).

The Jaguars led 47-28 at the half and maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the night. MVSU's defense did a better job in the second half holding Southern to 0-for-6 shooting on three-pointers and 13-of-27 field goals. Green carried the scoring load for the Delta Devils with eight second-half points including a pair of three-pointers while Jones-Rollins added six points. The closest MVSU came to was a 17-point margin (70-53) on a Rollins-Jones jumper with 4:00 minutes to go.

MVSU recorded a season-low 23 rebounds in their 80-56 loss to Southern. The Jaguars had a trio reach double-figure scoring led by Hassan Hussein's 18 points. Jayden Saddler finished with 14 points and Aaron Ray chipped in 12 points.

MVSU will host Prairie View and Texas Southern in the HPER Harrison Complex on Saturday, Jan. 26 and Monday, Jan. 28 closing out the month of January. The Delta Devils and the Panthers play at 4:30 p.m.
