Football Comes Up Short in Overtime Against Jackson St.

ITTA BENA, Miss. - Mississippi Valley State (1-6, 0-3) dropped an overtime heart to rival Jackson State (2-5, 1-1) 31-28 on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium.

Key Game Stats
  • Valley averaged a season-high 7.0 yards per pass to go along with three scores.
  • Offensively, MVSU collected 346 total yards averaging 5.2 yards per play.
  • Dejerric Bryant completed 14-of-27 passing attempts. He finished with a season-high three touchdowns.
  • Jarius Clayton had his first 100-yard receiving game of the season.
  • Clayton, Marcus Kidd, and Malik Myers all caught touchdowns from Bryant in the first half.
  • Tadarius Davis finished with 10 tackles including six solo stops. This was his third game with double-digit tackles. 
  • Jerry Garner had five tackles and 2.5 sacks.
  • Eric Powell and Romallis Carey also recorded sacks.
  • William Morgan and Keonte' Daniels both had interceptions.

How It Happened
  • Valley scored on their opening possession. Caleb Johnson caught a 21-yard pass from Bryant on third down to move the chains. Bryant proceeded to find Clayton on back-to-back completions for 24 and 25-yards out respectively with MVSU scoring from 25-yards out for an early lead.
  • MVSU blocked a JSU punt at the beginning of the second quarter. Marcus Kidd used his speed and length to block and also recover the fumble at the Tigers 21-yard line.
  • Bryant rewarded Kidd for his previous play and found him in the end zone for a 21-yard passing touchdown.
  • With a 14-0 lead, the Delta Devils defense stopped the Tigers and forced another punt. Bryant went on to lead MVSU on an eight-play 53-yard drive capped with a 14-yard strike to Malik Myers with 10:46 on the clock.
  • The Delta Devils led 21-0 until JSU scored on a 19-yard passing touchdown with 4:01 remaining in the second quarter.
  • The second half started with the Tigers returning a 46-yard punt return for a touchdown after MVSU went 3-and-out to start the third quarter.
  • On the final play of the third quarter, JSU's Derrick Ponder tied the game up with a 12-yard passing touchdown.
  • JSU outscored MVSU 14-0 in the third quarter as the Delta Devils went 0-of-3 on third downs.
  • The Delta Devils rebounded in the fourth quarter after a sluggish third period.
  • On defense, Daniels intercepted the Tigers on the MVSU 21 yard line putting an end to a JSU drive. 
  • Hayden Schuster missed a 47-yard field goal attempt on the MVSU ensuing possession and then Ray Taylor blocked a JSU 29-yard field goal attempt after the Tigers used 13 plays gaining 57 yards.
  • With 6:07 remaining in regulation a costly turnover by MVSU put the Tigers in scoring range.
  • Bryant was sacked and fumbled the ball as JSU recovered it. The Tigers took a 28-21 lead on a 7-yard rushing touchdown by Kymani Clarke.
  • Bryant got revenge by taking MVSU 71-plays for 71 yards while scoring on a seven-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left on the clock.
  • In overtime, the Delta Devils missed a 44-yard field goal attempt after losing two yards on their first drive of the extra session.
  • The Tigers completed an eight-yard pass to DD Bowie that set up a 34-yard game-winning field goal for JSU's Adrian Salazar, 31-28.
