Football Suffers Tough Loss to Grambling

ITTA BENA, Miss. - Mississippi Valley State University's football team recognized 18 seniors before dropping a 40-0 decision to Grambling State on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium. 

MVSU falls to 2-8, 0-6 while Grambling moves to 5-5, 3-2 record in the conference.


KEY GAME STATS
  • Sedevyn Gray led the Delta Devils with 58 all-purpose yards with 27 rushing yards, 13 receiving yards and 18 on kick return.
  • Caleb Johnson had three rushes for a team-high 28-yards while Dewayne Barnett also had three rushes for 27 yards.
  • Tadarius Davis recorded 10 tackles making four solo stops.
  • Tracy Thompkins added nine tackles, two tackles for a loss, and a pass breakup.
  • Jerry Garner had six tackles and a sack against the Tigers.
  • Grambling's Kevin Dominique finished with 128 rushing yards and a touchdown. Geremy Hickbottom threw for 111 yards and rushed for 63 with a touchdown.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • MVSU committed a season-high four turnovers and were held to 134 total yards on offense by the Grambling defense.
  • The Tigers gained 521 yards of total offense.
  • The Tigers went 78 yards on their opening drive on 12 plays taking an early lead. Charles Wright tossed a 27-yard touchdown to De'Vante Davis at the 10:55 mark.
  • On their next possession, GSU missed a 46-yard field goal as the Delta Devils held them on defense.
  • Prior to the ending of the first quarter, the Tigers drove the field in under a minute using three plays to score their second passing touchdown. Wright found Dequarius Thomas on a 25-yard catch and run into the endzone.
  • Miguel Mendez kicked a 20-yard field goal right before halftime as the Tigers went into intermission down 17-0. He had his second field goal of the game in the third quarter from 26-yards out with 11:44 remaining.
  • Grambling kept the attack with a five-yard rushing touchdown midway through the third quarter. Geremy Hickbottom made it a 27-0 game on a quarterback sneak at the 6:22 mark.
  • In the fourth quarter, Kevin Dominique rushed for a 23-yard touchdown with 10:06 left in regulation.
  • With 4:29 left in the fourth, Katrelle Starks rushed for a 34-yard touchdown for the Tigers in a 40-0 contest.
UP NEXT
  • The Delta Devils will conclude their 2019 on the road. MVSU travels to Alabama A&M on Saturday, Nov. 23rd for a meeting with the Bulldogs.
