HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The duo of
Ayonna Cotten and
Shelli Thigpen combined for 41 points, but Mississippi Valley State University women's basketball team came up short 78-70 to Omaha at the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Holiday Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ayonna Cotten scored 11 points in the first quarter anchoring MVSU to a 22-17 lead.
Omaha outscored MVSU 24-16 in the second quarter after the Mavericks hit 6-of-14 three-pointers.
Erin Smith made MVSU's only three-pointer in the third quarter while Cotten scored six points. The Devilettes managed to cut into the Omaha lead winning the period 15-14.
The Devilettes began the fourth quarter down 55-53 to Omaha.
Diamond Wraggs tied the game with the first points of the period followed by
Shelli Thigpen's offensive rebound and putback. MVSU was back in front by the 8:08 mark, 57-55.
Holding onto a four-point advantage for the next two minutes the Devilettes committed a pair of turnovers as Omaha rallied.
Josie Filer's three-pointer with 5:25 remaining gave Omaha a 64-63 lead. The Mavericks hit a shot in the paint and stretched the margin to three, 66-63.
Cotten drilled a three-pointer tying the game up at the 4:00 minute mark sparking the Devilettes.
Omaha answered with three consecutive three-pointers and opened a 75-68 lead with 1:07 left to play.
Cotten made MVSU's final basket with 19-seconds, but the Mavericks converted free throws to stay in front for a 78-70 decision.
LOOKING AT THE BOX SCORE
- The Devilettes recorded a season-high 10 steals against the Mavericks. Their 51.8 field goal shooting percentage and .500 three-point shooting percentage were both second-best this season.
- Cotten scored 20+ points for the second time this season with 22 points. She was a perfect 4-for-4 on free throws.
- Thigpen scored a season-high 19 points making nine field goals. She also contributed a four steals
- For the fifth time, Diamond Wraggs led MVSU in rebounding with eight.
- Smith hit a pair of three-pointers scoring eight points while Ronni Williams had seven points.
