Howard's Double-Double Not Enough in Road Setback to Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Co. - Azaria Howard recorded her first career double-double scoring 12 points with 11 rebounds in a 65-46 loss for the Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team at Colorado State. MVSU falls to 1-8 overall record and CSU moved to 6-6 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rams led from start to finish and managed to hold the Devilettes to their second-lowest shooting percentage of the season (.286) on 18-of-63 made field goals and 6-of-20 three-pointers. 
  • In the first quarter, Erin Smith and Sydnie Ward combined for 11 of 15 points keeping the Devilettes within a six-point margin.
  • Ward nailed a three-pointer at the 1:22 mark of the first period trimming the deficit to 16-13. 
  • The Devilettes trailed the Rams 16-15 heading into the second quarter. Colorado State turned up the defensive pressure in front of their home crowd and outscored MVSU 41-16 over the next two quarters. 
  • CSU held the Devilettes to 29 percent shooting from the field in the second quarter and opened a 12-point advantage (39-27) at the half. 
  • The cold-shooting for MVSU continued into the third quarter. Azaria Howard made MVSU's only field goal while Ayonna Cotten made a pair of free throws as CSU dominated going on an 18-4 run.
  • Howard and Smith carried the scoring load down the stretch for MVSU. 
  • The Devilettes battled and outscored the Rams 15-8 in the fourth quarter. Howard had six points while Smith chipped in five points including her third three-pointer of the afternoon.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Azaria Howard posted a season-high total in both points and rebounds making 6-of-10 shots from the field. 
  • For the fifth time this season, Erin Smith reached double-figure scoring with 11 points.
  • Despite being held to only eight points, Ayonna Cotten led the defensive charge with three steals.
  • The Devilette bench scoring was led by Sydnie Ward. Ward scored five points and tied a season-high with five rebounds.
  • Colorado State converted on 14-of-16 (.875) free throws and blocked six shots.
  • Myanna Hamm finished with a game-high 17 points off the Rams bench. Megan Jacobs had 14 points and Annie Brady had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds for CSU.

  • MVSU returns to action on Friday, Dec. 20 with a road trip to Memphis, Tenn. The Devilettes will battle the Tigers of Memphis at 5:30 p.m.
