Delta Devils Take Down Alcorn, 76-68

ITTA BENA, Miss. (February 16, 2019) – Mississippi Valley State men's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing streak by defeating Alcorn, 76-68 in the Harrison HPER Complex Saturday evening. The Delta Devils had four players score in double-figures with seniors Dante Scott and Jordan Evans each finishing with 20 points.

MVSU (4-22, 2-10 SWAC) shot 49 percent (26-53) from the field posting their second-best shooting percentage of the season. Their defense held Alcorn State (8-16, 4-8 SWAC) to 17 percent (3-17) on three-point attempts and to only nine made field goals throughout the evening. The Delta Devils scored 16 points off 14 Alcorn turnovers and outscored them in the paint, 32-28.

Junior Michael Green hit two three-pointers sparking a 10-3 run for the Delta Devils in the second half at the 12:04 mark putting MVSU ahead 53-43. A late 6-0 run by Alcorn tied the game at 57 with 4:17 left to play. Evans ended the drought with a floater in the paint and then a pair of free throws by senior Gregory Jones-Rollins gave MVSU a 61-57 advantage. Scott scored 14 and Evans scored nine in the second half alone.

In the final minute, the Delta Devils converted on 8-of-10 free throws and built a 64-73 lead with 22-seconds left. Senior Emmanuel Ejeh, Jones-Rollins and Scott visited the line to increase the Delta Devil lead. Ejeh had a huge block in the final moments on the Braves and a slam dunk by Jones-Rollins sealed the deal, 76-68.

Scott made 11-of-12 free-throws leading a Delta Devil squad that made 21-of-29 (72 percent) from the line. Evans was lights out from the field making 8-of-12 field goals and dished out four assists. Jones -Rollins had his seventh double-figure scoring output with 16 points and had a team-high two steals. Green led the bench scoring with 10 points knocking down a pair of three-pointers.

Deshaw Andrews led the Braves with 14 points off their bench. Devon Brewer scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and Troymain Crosby had 10 points. 

The Delta Devils will host the Jaguars of Southern on Monday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Harrison HPER Complex.
