Slow Start Dooms Devilettes at Lady Panthers

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (February 23, 2019) – Three Devilettes reached double-figure scoring in a 91-55 road loss at Prairie View on Saturday in the William Nicks Arena. Seniors LaKendra Bassett and Desiray Mosley both scored 14 points while junior Erin Smith finished with 10 points.
 
Bassett made 5-of-11 shots from the field and 4-of-5 free throws while leading MVSU with eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Mosley made 4-of-8 three-pointers while Smith went 3-for-7 from long range as the Devilettes shot 43 percent (7-16) from beyond the arc.
 
Prairie View held MVSU to two made field goals in the first quarter and led 23-6 by the second period. Bassett and Smith combined for 15 of 20 MVSU points in the second quarter. The Devilettes trailed by 13 (29-16) after Bassett drained a pair from the line with 5:48 to go. The Lady Panthers ended the half on a 17-10 run taking a comfortable 26-26 lead into the break.
 
Mosley registered 11 second-half points making three three-pointers, but the Devilettes struggled to make only 11-of-30 field goals and was held to 3-of-7 attempts from the charity stripe. PVAMU kept increasing their lead and used their bench to power them to a huge 40-point lead with 2:23 left in regulation.
 
Artavia Ford led PVAMU with 17 points, Sierra Shepherd had 11 points and Dominique Newman had 10 points. The Lady Panthers finished the game shooting 56 percent (36-64) from the field, 50 percent (13-26) from three-point range and 75 percent (6-8) on free throws. Their bench outscored MVSU's bench 43-15.
 
MVSU returns to action on Monday, Feb. 25 with their final road game of the season visiting Texas Southern for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
