Third Quarter Rally Leads MVSU to Victory over Grambling State, 54-52

GRAMBLING, La. (February 4, 2019) – Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team used a huge third quarter rally after trailing by double-digits at halftime to outscore Grambling State 33-19 in the second half in a 54-52 road win Monday evening. Four Devilettes notched double-figure scoring led by senior Desiray Mosley's 14 points and team-high seven rebounds.

Mosley made her impact at the charity stripe making 7-of-10 free throws. In the second half, Mosley made 6-of-8 free throws and her last two put MVSU in front by one with seven seconds left on the clock.

MVSU (4-16, 3-6 SWAC) led 51-49 with just over a minute to go, but a costly turnover on an inbound pass put Grambling State (9-12, 6-3 SWAC) in front 52-51 with 22-seconds to go. The Devilettes capitalized on a technical foul called on GSU with seven seconds. Mosley went to the line and swished both attempts anchoring a final comeback by the Devilettes.

The Lady Tigers trailed MVSU 53-52 and was forced to foul once again. MVSU senior LaKendra Bassett split her attempts at the line making it a 54-52 contest with four seconds left. The Lady Tigers last second shot from beyond the three-point line came up short and MVSU escaped with a 54-52 victory ending a five-game losing streak.

The Devilettes forced Grambling into a season-high 31 turnovers and had 13 steals, their second most of the season. Despite only making 17 field goals, MVSU's defense was the key factor. Bassett scored all 11 of her points in the second half. She made a pair of three-pointers and recorded five steals with three assists. Meanwhile, GSU made 13-of-25 shots from the field including 4-of-6 three-pointers and held a 33-21 advantage at halftime.

MVSU opened the third period on a 12-4 run and cut the deficit to 37-34 on a Bassett layup at the 5:14 mark. Freshman Sydnie Ward cut the MVSU deficit to two (40-38) at the 1:53 mark in the period on a hard drive to the basket. On the ensuing possession GSU missed a pair of free throws and then senior Kristy Parker's layup tied the game at 40-40 with 1:15 to go in the third.
