PINE BLUFF, Ark. (March 19, 2019) – Sophomore Alyssa Montes pitched a complete game striking out three batters in a 7-3 victory for Mississippi Valley State at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday at Torii Hunter Complex. The Devilettes recorded a season-high 12 hits and took a commanding lead with three runs in the fourth inning.
MVSU improves to an overall record of 2-19 while UAPB falls to 0-18. Senior Sharia Cormier went 3-for-3 at the plate, drew a walk and hammered a pair of RBI. Junior Kailyn Dunn had a pair of hits including a double and one RBI, sophomore Deshonte Smith finished with two hits and one RBI and sophomore Kennedy Lester collected two hits and scored a run.
UAPB took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before MVSU stormed back with three runs in both the second and third innings. Cormier led the inning off with a walk and then scored on an error by the UAPB defense. Then in the third inning, Dunn singled to start the inning and later scored on an RBI single by Smith. Cormier brought in Smith with an RBI single to left field. In the bottom half of the inning, UAPB tied things up at 3-3. The Devilettes had a huge fourth inning where they scored three runs on four hits putting away the Lady Golden Lions.
Sophomore Kennedy Lester singled to right field and then crossed home plate on Dunn's RBI double to center field. UAPB made a pitching change with the bases loaded but freshman Jade Arroyo hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field scoring pinch runner sophomore Natalie Bishop. For the third time, Cormier singled and drove in freshman Jaylon Davis for a MVSU 6-3 advantage.
Montes held the Lady Golden Lions to three hits the rest of the way. In the seventh inning, pinch runner junior Miranda Sandoval scored after Lester was caught in a rundown attempting to steal second base. The Devilettes snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over UAPB.
Up next for MVSU softball is a three-game SWAC road trip to Baton Rouge, La. The Devilettes will play Southern on Friday, March 22 at 3 p.m. and then a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 beginning at 1 p.m.
