LORMAN, La. (March 24, 2019) - Mississippi Valley State baseball swept the Alcorn State Braves in their SWAC weekend series after pulling out a 14-2 win Sunday at McGowan Stadium. The Delta Devils (5-8, 4-3 SWAC) finished with eight hits, drew 12 walks, stole five bases and had four extra-base hits.
Freshman Antonio Walker pitched a complete game striking out four surrendering no earned runs for MVSU. Alcorn State (6-16, 1-7) was held to five hits, six walks and failed to register any runs after the second inning. MVSU tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning and then outscored the Braves 13-1 the rest of the way.
Senior Wendell Rieves drove in four runs finishing 2-for-5 at the plate. Senior Jordan Sawyer homered the first time this season, senior Fredrick Spencer recorded a game-high three runs, and senior Morgan Lomax stole two bases, scored two runs and hit a double.
Senior Marshall Parrish got the Delta Devils going with an RBI double to left center field scoring Spencer in the second inning. In the third inning, MVSU scored three runs on three hits as Rieves had two RBI off of a double to left field. Junior Aaron Barkley and sophomore Willie Johnson both scored after Johnson reached on a bunt and Barkley reached on a fielding error that allowed junior Chase Colding to score after leading the inning off with a single through the left side.
Spencer scored for the second time on an error by the Braves in the sixth inning stretching the MVSU advantage to 5-2. The game was put out of reach with a huge ninth inning for the Delta Devils. MVSU tacked on nine runs on three hits securing the season sweep over Alcorn State 14-2.
Lomax drew a walk and then proceeded to steal both second and third bases. Rieves drove in a pair of runs on a single through the left side scoring both Lomax and Barkley. The Braves began to crumble allowing both Rieves and redshirt sophomore Billy Leflore to cross home plate on a wild pitch. With two runners on, Sawyer went yard for the first time this season on a three-run shot to left field. In his second at-bat of the inning, Leflore hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring
Johnson followed by Lomax scoring again on a wild pitch.
MVSU heads to Starkville, Miss for a midweek matchup at Mississippi State on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. before hosting Tougaloo College at home on Wednesday, March 27 at 2 p.m.
