AAMU Takes Down Delta Devils in Weekend Series

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (March 29-31, 2019) – Junior Chase Colding led Mississippi Valley State (6-12, 5-7) baseball totaling four RBI, hit two triples, and had a solo home run during the three-game conference series at Alabama A&M (12-20, 8-4). The Bulldogs swept the weekend series (6-0, 6-2, 11-6) against the Delta Devils.
 
GAME 3: AAMU 11, MVSU 6
The Delta Devils had 12 hits but committed three errors in their final game of the weekend series falling 11-6. The Bulldogs took a 7-4 lead after six runs in the third inning to pull away from MVSU. MVSU had six players registering two hits led by Colding's first home run of the season. Freshman Antonio Walker (1-2) made the start on the mound an went five innings striking out one batter. Junior Aaron Barkley pitched two innings in relief and struck out a season-high five batters.
 
In the first inning, the Delta Devils scored two runs to take an early lead. Barkley RBI singled scoring freshman Willie Johnson and then senior Frederick Spencer RBI singled sending Barkley home. After AAMU scored a run in the bottom of the inning, Colding gave the Delta Devils a 3-1 lead with a solo home run to right field in the second inning.
 
The next score for the Delta Devils came by way of Colding grounding out for an RBI in the third inning. Spencer scored on the play after reaching base on a fielding error by the Bulldogs defense. AAMU took control exploding for six runs in the third inning for a 7-4 contest.
 
MVSU came up with three hits in the fifth inning that led to a pair of runs. Senior Wendell Rieves led off with a single to center field followed by Spencer with a single to left field. Colding hit his second triple of the season sending the ball to center field scoring both senior Marshall Parrish and Spencer (7-6).
 
The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the fifth inning and another two in the seventh inning for an 11-6 victory, clinching the weekend series.
 
GAME 2: AAMU 6, MVSU 2
 
MVSU was held to five hits and scored their only runs of the game in the eighth inning falling 6-2 to AMMU on Saturday. Freshman Gerald Pintarich (1-4) pitched five innings fanning two batters, walked two and gave up three earned runs. Johnson had two hits pacing the Delta Devils offense with a double and a stolen base.
 
Trailing 5-0 in the eighth inning, the Delta Devils capitalized off of a bases loaded walk followed by a bases loaded hit by pitch that sent both Barkley and redshirt sophomore Billy Leflore across home plate for the only MVSU runs of the afternoon.
 
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth inning for the early advantage. Johnson doubled to left field in the first inning, senior Jordan Sawyer singled to right field in the second and Colding hit his first triple of the season in the seventh inning.
 
AAMU stretched their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth and then held MVSU to one hit in the ninth inning holding on for the win.
 
GAME 1: AAMU 6, MVSU 0
 
On Friday AAMU shutout the Delta Devils, 6-0 scoring runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. MVSU came away with six hits and forced AAMU into four errors but failed to score any runs for the second time this season.
 
Leflore singled in the third inning, Spencer singled to center in the fourth and Johnson singled in the fifth inning. Both Barkley and Rieves singled in the eighth inning and Parrish singled to left field in the ninth.
 
Sophomore Nicholas Johnson (2-1) went six innings on the mound striking out one and walked two. Relief pitchers redshirt sophomore Brandon Hawkins and freshman Joshua Lathem both pitched one inning for MVSU.
 
MVSU returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 with a mid-week matchup at Northwestern State at 6 p.m. The teams will battle again in Natchitoches, La. on Wednesday, April 3 at 6 p.m.
