ITTA BENA, Miss. (April 16, 2019) – Mississippi Valley State combined for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings rallying from behind to defeat Louisiana Monroe, 9-8 at the MVSU Softball Field on Tuesday. Senior Dejanae Gage clinched the Devilettes' victory with a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
The Devilettes (5-29) had 13 hits compared to only five by the Warhawks (7-35). Gage finished with four RBI on a pair of hits while freshman Jade Arroyo led the way with three hits and an RBI. On the mound, sophomore Alyssa Montes went 2.2 innings holding ULM to no hits or runs earning the win.
ULM struck first with two hits leading to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Devilettes gave up an error in the inning and then Korie Kreps doubled to center field scoring Sydney McKay. MVSU responded in the bottom half of the inning. Arroyo RBI singled to right field scoring freshman Jaylon Davis from second base tying the game.
Then the Warhawks' brought in two runs on a single to right field in the second inning for a 3-1 lead. MVSU came back in the third inning on an Arroyo double to center followed by Gage's RBI single to center field scoring Davis. ULM took a commanding lead with four runs in the fifth inning springing to an 8-2 lead. MVSU struggled walking five batters in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Arroyo singled and then MVSU drew a pair of walks to load the bases. Smith scored on a bases-loaded walk, senior Sharia Cormier RBI singled to left field scoring pinch runner freshman Ayana Taylor, and then junior Lacy Wilburn RBI grounded out scoring Gage for a quick three runs. Freshman Demi Slater scored the last run on an RBI single to center field by senior Kailyn Dunn cutting the deficit to 8-6.
ULM came up with nothing at the plate while the Devilettes continued to gain momentum. Davis led the sixth inning off with a triple to deep center field, her second of the season. Next, Smith drew a walk to put runners on the corner and then Gage crushed a three-run homer to center field bringing in both Smith and Davis for an MVSU 9-8 lead.
Montes held the Warhawks down the stretch with solid pitching in an exciting win for the Devilettes at home.
MVSU returns to the field this weekend for a three-game homestand with Alabama A&M. The teams will play a single game on Friday, April 19 at 4:30 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
