ITTA BENA, Miss. – Backed by the pitching of
Alyssa Montes (San Antonio, Tex.), the Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes picked up their second SWAC win of the year with a 3-1 victory over Alabama A&M Friday (April 19).
Montes went the full seven innings, scattering just three hits and one earned run. The sophomore struck out three on the way to her fourth victory of the season.
Alabama A&M scored the first run with an RBI double. In the second inning, Valley tied the contest off a sacrifice pop up from
Sharia Cormier (Hemet, Calif.).
Jaylon Davis (Murietta, Calif.) added a sacrifice fly of her own in the fifth for the Devilettes' first lead. A double by
Lacy Wilburn (Boerne, Tex.) in the sixth added insurance.
For Valley, the win gives the softball squad its first winning streak of the season. Their record improves to 6-29 (2-10 SWAC).
The series concludes with a doubleheader against A&M beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday (April 20) at the MVSU Softball Field.
