Baseball swept in doubleheader by Jackson State

Valley’s offense limited to four runs in the two games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University baseball team was held in check by the Jackson State Tigers Friday (April 9). The Tigers swept a doubleheader over the Delta Devils, winning the first game 12-2 and the second game 5-2.

Valley's record falls to 6-20 (5-11 SWAC) this spring.

Jackson State jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first game. The Delta Devil offense was held in check until the sixth, when Wendell Rieves (Carhtage, Miss.) smacked a two-run double. That accounted for all of Valley's scoring, and the Tigers closed out the game with three runs, ending the game early in the eighth.

In the second game, Gerald Pinatrich (Clairsville, Ohio) battled in a pitchers' duel with Jackson's Garth Cahill. Neither side could muster a run for the first 5 ½ innings. It was the Tigers, however, who broke the deadlock with four runs in the sixth.

Chase Colding (Farmington Hills, Mich.) hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to get Valley on the board. Aaron Barkley (El Cajon, Calif.) added an RBI single in the eighth. Barkley led all Devil batters with three hits during the doubleheader.

The series wraps up in Jackson Saturday (April 20). First pitch is slated for 1 p.m..
