Softball honors seniors with sweep of A&M

Smith’s walk-off single sets tone for 8-5 win in finale

ITTA BENA, Miss. – Thanks to a walk off single by Deshonte Smith (Joilet, Ill.) and a late offensive charge, the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes swept Alabama A&M Saturday (April 20). Valley improves to 8-29 (4-10 SWAC) this season.

Smith's walk-off in the eighth secured a 1-0 win and gave senior Alejandra Salazar (Houston, Tex.) her second victory of the season. The pitcher's complete game victory included three strikeouts and just two hits for the Bulldogs.

In the second contest, Alabama A&M got on the board quickly with three runs in the first three innings. Kailyn Dunn (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) smacked a single up the middle in the fourth to cut the deficit down to 3-2. Senior Sharia Cormier (Hemet, Calif.) tied the score with an RBI double, and Brianna Alston (Rocklin, Calif.) drove in the go-ahead run on a bunt single. Cormier had three RBI's on the day.

The go-ahead rally produced three runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Senior Dejanae Gage (Las Vegas, Nev.) added an RBI double in the sixth inning.

Daisy Page (Anchorage, Ak.) recovered from her tough start to also go the distance in game two. For Page, the victory is her first collegiate win.

The Devilettes wrap up their 2019 home schedule with a doubleheader Tuesday (April 23) against Arkansas Pine Bluff.
