ITTA BENA, Miss. – Pitcher
Daisy Page (Anchorage, Ak.) won her second straight game and the offense rode an early wave as the Mississippi Valley State softball team defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff Tuesday (April 23) by an 8-2 score.
"Well, the greatest comment on today is that the weather was good, we didn't have to work super hard on the field, but overall, our players came out ready to go today." Head Coach
Lee Smith said. "We attacked early on in the count. We had a chance to play a lot of kids today, and that is the most important thing getting ready to go into the weekend."
Page went the full seven frames, adding five strikeouts. She peppered nine hits and three walks but only allowed two runs in the fourth. The Devilettes defense was especially helpful with no errors during the conteast.
"It felt good coming into the game knowing that my defense was behind me, and the offense was on the other side too, and also going up there at each batter and trying to win." Page said.
Valley put the game away early with six runs over the first two innings.
Ayana Taylor (Ackerman, Miss.) doubled her RBI total for the year with a two run double in the first for a 3-0 lead.
Jade Arroyo (Texas City, Tex.),
Dejanae Gage (Las Vegas, Nev.) and
Sharia Cormier (Hemet, Calif.) added RBI singles to double their advantage in the second.
A triple by
Miranda Sandoval (San Antonio, Tex.) added insurance by plating two runs in the fourth inning.
For the Devilettes, the win improves their record to 9-29 on the season. The victory extends Valley's win streak to five games.
The game also concluded the 2019 home schedule. Regular season play wraps up with Jackson State on Friday (April 26) and Saturday (April 27).
