ITTA BENA, Miss. – Following a pair of gut-wrenching losses on the road, Mississippi Valley State challenges Bethune-Cookman in the squad's first showdown at Rice-Totten Stadium. This is a rematch of a 2018 contest, where the Wildcats defeated the Delta Devils 41-27 in Daytona Beach.
TAKEAWAYS FROM THE LAST GAME
The Delta Devils switched tactics from the aerial assault they attempted in the season opener at Tennessee State. Quarterback Dejerric Bryant took part in all three touchdown, but two of them came running the ball. The senior finished with 218 all-purpose yards -127 rushing and 91 passing. Receiver Johnny Wilson caught three passes for 51 yards and a score to lead wideouts. Tracy Thompkins earned 15 tackles, and Keonte' Daniels finished with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Rod Sylvestre added an interception - the first for him at Valley and his team's first of the year.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Bethune-Cookman stands at 1-1 on the season following a 36-15 victory over Jackson State and a 63-0 defeat at the hands of powerhouse Miami. A home game versus Southeastern Louisiana was cancelled due to Hurricane Dorian earlier this month. Coach Terry Sims and crew bring a balanced attack to Itta Bena, averaging 100 passing yards and 97 rushing yards. Quarterback Akevious Williams - like Valley's Bryant - is a dual threat with 186 yards passing and 63 rushing. The Wildcats also rely of Isaac Washington's 4.8 yards per carry. On defense, Rashon McNeil leads with 15 tackles and a sack and 12 takedowns from Devin James.
TRACY THOMPKINS WINS SWAC TOP DEFENDER
For recording 15 tackles for the second time as a Delta Devil, Tracy Thompkins was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week. 13 of the tackles were solo and two assists. Thompkins leads the conference in made tackles with 27, and also received a Honorable Mention from STATS Perform in the nationwide selection.
