Box Score PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Although the Mississippi Valley State volleyball team made positive strides this weekend, their stay at the first SWAC Round Up ended disappointingly with a 3-1 loss (10-25, 23-25, 25-23, 19-25) to Southern University Sunday (Sept. 29). The Devilettes stand at 3-18 (0-5 SWAC) following the opening weekend of conference play.
Tylia Dixon (Chino, Calif.) and
Tyler Caliste (New Orleans, La.) fell just short of double-doubles for the match. Dixon led with nine kills and 14 digs, while Caliste ended with eight kills and nine digs.
Zion Hardy (Winterville, N.C.) tallied 30 assists, and
Jessica Bell (Cedar Hill, Tex.) added 17 digs.
For Southern, Brianna Hawkins led the match with 17 kills and setter Princess Stark recorded a double-double of 38 assists and 12 digs. Stark fell three aces shy of a triple-double.
The teams were almost even on service aces, with Valley holding the 12-11 advantage. But the Jaguars outpaced the Devilettes 49-32 on kills, 45-31 on assists and five to two in blocks.
Valley will travel for an Alabama swing next weekend as they take on the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M on October 6
th and the Hornets of Alabama State October 7
th.
