Soccer to host SCSU; travel to Southern Miss

ITTA BENA, Miss.  – After a contest with Mississippi University for Women was postponed due to weather, the Mississippi Valley State soccer team added a match vs. South Carolina State to be played in Itta Bena Friday (9/6) at 6 pm.. Valley will then head to Southern Miss for a Sunday evening showdown with the Golden Eagles.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE DEVILETTES: Mississippi Valley struggled in their season opener, giving up five goals over 24 shots while being shot by the Nicholls State Colonels. The two teams     challenged     each other the next day, and Valley's stout defense prevented 33 out of 34 shots. A penalty kick by freshman Shay McCool helped the Devilettes earn a 1-1 tie.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: South Carolina State is coming off a 1-11-1 campaign a year ago, and 2019 so far has also started inauspiciously. The Bulldogs lost 5-1 to Wofford and 2-0 to North     Dakota     to kick off the season. Elizabeth McGee is the lone goal scorer for SCSU. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 13 win season and an appearance in the Conference USA Championship     game in 2018, but     have lost three of five to start 2019. Southern Miss lost its leading goal scorer from a year ago, and the result has been just five goals in the first five games. Alice Campos and     Haley Pohevitz have     registered two goals each to start the year.

LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THESE TEAMS: Valley and South Carolina State have only met once before - a scoreless tie back in 2011. The Devilettes and Golden Eagles have played nine times,     with     Southern Miss holding a decisive 8-1 advantage. The last official meeting was an 8-0 rout in 2014, though both teams played an exhibition last season. Valley's lone win came in 2007 - a 2-1     victory.
