Sell Out Not Enough for Delta Devils

In front of a sellout crowd of 10,000, Mississippi Valley State put up a fight against the No.16-ranked Jackson State Tigers on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium. The Delta Devils, however, came up short in a 28-19 loss to the Tigers.

MVSU went into halftime down just 7-6, before JSU extended its lead in the third quarter behind a 41-yard touchdown catch by Malachi Wideman and a 26-yard fumble recovery touchdown from Al Young.

Caleb Johnson's 1-yard TD plunge in the fourth quarter cut JSU's lead, but the Tigers struck back with a 74-yard touchdown catch from Shadeur Sanders to Trevonte Rucker.

For the third time this season, Valley's 's Caleb Johnson surpassed the 100-yard mark, eclipsing 119 yards and a touchdown on the ground on 25 carries.

Jalani Eason completed 14-of-26 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. Jacory Rankin led the team with 4 receptions for 36 yards. Dontavious Porter added two receptions for 28 yards and a TD.

Orlando Fernandez connected on two field goals on the night (24 and 44 yards).

Defensively, Ronnie Thomas and Jalen Bell each had sack for the Delta Devils. Markell Gladney and Caleb Brunson finished the game with one interception apiece.

MVSU will be on the road next week at Alabama A&M before returning home on Nov. 13 for its final home game of the season against Alabama State.
