The Devilettes Compete in the Hornets Nest

MONTGOMERY, AL – The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes traveled to take on the Alabama State University Lady Hornets in Montgomery, Alabama on this past weekend. The two teams competed in a three-game series inside the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. 

Game 1
In the first game, the two teams were neck in neck but in the end the Lady Hornets took the win. Cailyn Peterson doubled to left field in the first inning for the Devilettes. In the second, Kayla Sanchez singled to left field followed by Sydney Wesley singling to shortstop and Kathleen Sims singled with a bunt. Sanchez scored the first point for the Devilettes (1-0). Shortly after, Jaylon Davis homered it to left center giving Slater, Wesley, and Sims the opportunity to score for the Devilettes (5-0). Brianna Alston singled to right field in the second inning for the Devilettes. The Lady Hornets scored eight times in the second inning, three of which were unearned (8-5). Wesley singled to center field in the fourth inning. Alston and Sanchez both hit singles in the fifth inning with Alston scoring another run for the Devilettes (8-6). The Lady Hornets made a comeback in the bottom of the sixth to add another point to their score (9-6). Peterson and Sanchez each doubled to left field in the seventh inning where Peterson scored the last point for the Devilettes (9-7). The Devilettes ended with three errors. The final score of the game was ASU 9 – MVSU 7.


Game 2
The Devilettes returned to the nest the following day for game 2. Jaylon Davis homered it to left field scoring the first point for the team (1-0). Cailyn Peterson followed that up in the fifth inning and homered to left center (2-0). Davis and Peterson both scored giving the Devilettes a nice lead (3-0). The Lady Hornets scored their first point in the fifth inning on a pass ball (3-1) they then evened the score out with the Devilettes in the seventh inning scoring consecutive points in the same play (3-3). The Lady Hornets won the game by scoring in the last play of the seventh inning (4-3). A'tajua Wren shad a total of four strikeouts at the end of the game. The final score of the game was ASU 4 – MVSU 3.


Game 3
The Devilettes concluded the series with a convincing win. The Lady Hornets made the first hit of the game in the second inning and the first point in the third (1-0). In the fourth inning, Brianna Alston singled to shortstop followed by Kayla Sanchez singling to center field. Brianna Alston scored the first point for the Devilettes (1-1). The Lady Hornets scored again in the fifth inning making the score (2-1). Cailyn Peterson singled to left field in the fourth inning. Keisha White doubled to left field, while B. Alston scored another point for the Devilettes (2-2). C. Peterson scored in the next play advancing the score to (3-2). Jaylon Davis singled to left field in the seventh inning with Kathleen Sims scoring shortly after taking the Devilettes to (4-2). White homered to left field, while Peterson and Davis each scored for the team, unearned (8-2). The final score of the game was MVSU 8 – ASU 2.
