Itta Bena, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes hosted Alumni Weekend against the Jackson State Tigers on Friday, Apr. 2
nd and Wednesday, Apr. 7
th. Both teams competed against each other in two games on Friday and one game on Wednesday.
Game 1
The first game of the series went in favor of the Tigers. The Tigers managed to score their first point on an error and shortly after another, making the score (2-0). The Tigers came back two plays later scoring two points all in the same play (4-0). Brianna Alston and Jaylon Davis both singled to left field for the Devilettes in the first inning. J. Davis returned to the third inning and singled to center field. Keisha White also singled on a pop fly to the pitcher for the Devilettes. The Tigers came back in the fifth inning scoring three times, each play back to back (7-10). Sydney Wesley singled on a fly ball to left field in the bottom of the fifth. J. Davis and K. White both singled to right field and S. Wesley scored for the Devilettes (7-1). Demi Slater earned the last hit for the team in the seventh inning with a single to left field. The team ended with three errors. The final score of the game was JSU 7 – MVSU 1.
Game 2
The second game occurred shortly after with the Devilettes putting the first point on the scoreboard. Jaylon Davis singled on a line drive to right field in the bottom of the first. Cailyn Peterson doubles on a fly ball to center field, while J. Davis scores the first point for the Devilettes (1-0). In the second inning, Karlee Schierbeek singles on a pop fly to the pitcher for the Devilettes. The Tigers come back in the top of the third and score two times back to back in the same play (2-1). The Tigers enter the fourth inning scoring another point advancing them to (3-1). Naomi Drake singled on a line drive to left field for the Devilettes in the fourth inning. The Tigers return to fifth inning scoring another point by Hubbard (4-1). In the fifth inning, Brianna Alston doubles on a pop fly to left field all while Laeni Terrones scores for the Devilettes (4-2). The Tigers receive the final three points of the game in the sixth inning in back to back plays (7-2). The Devilettes ended with a total of four errors. The final score of the game was JSU 7 – MVSU 2.
Game 3
The Devilettes took to defend the diamond for one last time in the series against the Tigers on Wednesday. The Tigers come out of the dugout scoring one point in the first inning (1-0). Gusman, a Tiger, homers on a fly play ball to left field in the second inning (2-0). Shortly after, the Tigers score again making the score (3-0). Kayla Sanchez singles on a hard ball to center field for the Devilettes in the second inning. Following K. Sanchez, Shelby Carson singles on a ground ball to right field and Brianna Alston singled on a ground ball to the pitcher. K. Sanchez quickly score a point for the Devilettes making the score (3-1). The Tigers come in the third scoring three points, two of which were in the same play (6-1). Laeni Terrones bunts out to the pitcher in the bottom of third for the Devilettes. K. Sanchez doubles on a fly ball to center field in the fourth inning. The Tigers score one point in the fifth and the sixth inning with a total of three hits (8-1). The Tigers score their last two points in the seventh inning in the same play (10-1). B. Alston hit an inside the park homerun on a fly ball to right field in the seventh inning for the Devilettes (10-2). J. Davis hit the last ball of the game with a double on a hard ground ball to third baseman. The Devilettes ended with a total of two errors. The final score of the game was JSU 10 – MVSU 2.
