Lee Picks Off Two Passes In First Half, Offense Shows Life Late At ASU


MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University football program got a magnificent defensive performance from cornerback Abdural Lee and offense scored a long touchdown in the waning seconds as they fell to Alabama State, 24-9.

  • Abdural Lee was the ultimate playmaker against the Hornets, leading the Delta Devils in tackles with six, and two tackles for loss while forcing both of the game's turnovers with his first two career interceptions at the FCS level.
 
  • Ronnie Thomas got his tackle for loss for the eighth game in-a-row out of the way early, dropping running back Santo Dunn in the backfield for a loss of three. The senior from Clinton, Mississippi ended the day second on the squad behind Lee on the afternoon at five total takedowns.
     
  • Donald Johnson III averaged 35 yards per kickoff return en route to a season-high, 70-yard day on special teams.
 
  • Jacory Rankin returned to the lineup and ended the day with a bang, connecting with Jamari Jones for a 62-yard touchdown reception for his second consecutive contest with a score.
 
  • Caleb Johnson went for a game-best 62 rushing yards and Jakobe Thomas had 45 on the ground for an average of 6.4 yards per carry.
 
  •  Orlando Fernandez tied his career-high of four punts downed inside the Alabama State red zone and put a 25-yard field goal through the uprights.
     
Notes:
 
  • Valley had its biggest turnover advantage of the year with a plus-two, won only its second turnover battle and did not turn the ball over for the first time since the season opener.
