HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University volleyball program travels to Space City on Sunday and Monday for a trio of matches as part of the first SWAC Round-Up of 2022.

Mississippi Valley State Overview:

Chariah Mabry and Mikayla Lee are the co-leaders of the Devilettes in service aces, dropping 11 apiece for the ninth-most in the SWAC.
 
Lee also fronts the ladies from Itta Bena in both assists (169, 4.33 p/s) and hitting percentage (.111) while Mabry is the top blocker (10, 0/25 p/s).
 
Torre Giron has emerged as the top defender for Head Coach Mariah Prince, reeling in a team-high 84 digs for an average of 2.10 per set.
 
Chardea Berthelot reclaimed her role as leading scorer as she is first regarding points (66.5, 2.15 p/s) plus kills (57, 1.84 p/s).
 
Scouting The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions:
 
UAPB has broken even in conference play so far while picking up non-conference wins over Alcorn and Arkansas Tech.
 
The Black and Gold are one of the top serving and defensive teams in the league this year, averaging 1.54 aces and 14.11 digs per set to rank second and third, respectively.
 
Breana August has done most of the "digging", contributing 4.13 digs per set to place only behind FAMU's Brooke Hudson in the SWAC.
 
Fernanda Spengler (2.53 kills p/s) and Zykia Jones (2.45 kills p/s) are the top offensive threats for the Lady Lions with Laila Fortson (1.44 kills p/s) and Starvoula Papazoglou (1.38 kills p/s) also capable of doing some damage.
 
Scouting The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers:
 
The Lady Panthers took down Texas Southern in the SWAC opener on top of Huston Tillotson and Lamar in non-conference but come into the weekend losers of two in-a-row.
 
Kylee Owens has been a one-woman show for PVAMU, leading the league in service aces per set (0.49) while being the runner-up for both kills (3.54) and points (4.10) per set.
 
Scouting The Grambling State Lady Tigers:
 
Grambling is one of only two undefeated teams in SWACtion (4-0) and is the lone team with an overall record at or above .500 (7-7) while toppling Southern Illinois and New Orleans outside of league play.
 
GSU is a defensive force, ranking top-30 in the country for digs per set (16.04) and top-40 nationally regarding opponents hitting percentage (.167).
 
The defense is led by the duo of Haley Gomez and Nyah Ellis, who are second in blocks per set (1.02) and third for digs per set (4.06) in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
 
Not only do they have a pair of stud defenders, they have arguably the best attacker in the conference as Jayden James leads the SWAC in kills (4.20) and points (4.71) per set, producing top-30 national rankings in each category.
