Veterans
McKenzie McCarthy and
Rahael Aka-Ety also had nice starts to the campaign as McCarthy logged seven saves while Aka-Ety launched a pair of shots including on on-goal against SUU.
McCarthy currently slots among the NCAA's top-20 goalkeepers, ranking 18th for saves per game (7.00)
Scouting The Southern Miss Lady Eagles:
USM has allowed 11 goals without finding the back of the net in two contests, but its matches were on the road against SEC juggernauts, Auburn (9-0) and Alabama (2-0).
Southern Mississippi is expected to bounce back strong however, as the Black and Gold were tied for second place in the SWAC West division in the preseason poll behind returners Kesaia Bruni (goalkeeper) and Preseason All-Sun Belt midfielder Ilana Izquierdo.
Bruni places among the country's top-40 for saves per game (6.00) which leads the conference.
Izquierdo led the Lady Eagles in points (21) as a freshman in 2021, is representing Columbia at the U20 World Cup, and was Conference USA Freshman of the Year last season.
