ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Mississippi Valley State Diamond Devils split in a home-opening doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.
Game 1 | Box Score
The Diamond Devils grabbed an early lead on its way to a 12-5 victory over UAPB.
MVSU racked up 12 hits in the game. Davon Mims, Victor Figueroa, Davione Hull, and Maury Weaver recorded multiple hits. Mims went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Diamond Devils in hits.
Calvin McClendon took the win for game one against UAPB. McClendon lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and five runs while striking out seven.
"McClendon gave us a gutsy performance on the mound," said head coach Milton Barney. "We competed well, overall."

MVSU lost the lead by the end of the eighth inning, late in an 11-8 final to the Golden Lions.
The Diamond Devils scored five runs in the sixth inning. Offense in the inning came from groundouts by Figueroa and Mims, a walk by Ty Washington, and an error on a ball put in play by Hull.
Hull and Mims led MVSU in hits, with a hit each.
"We battled, but the ball didn't roll our way," said Barney. "We just have to do a better job at executing in key spots. Overall we are headed in the right direction."

The Diamond Devils will return to Magnolia Field on Sunday, February 26 to complete the home opening weekend series against the Golden Lions of UAPB. The first pitch is set for noon.
