Mississippi Valley State (MVSU) faced a tough challenge on the road against Tennessee State (TSU) in their season opener, ultimately falling 41-21. The Delta Devils struggled to find their rhythm early in the game, allowing TSU to build a commanding lead with three touchdowns in the first quarter alone.
TSU struck first with a 55-yard touchdown pass just two and a half minutes into the game. The Tigers quickly added two more scores, one on a 1-yard pass and the other on a 54-yard fumble return, putting MVSU in a 21-0 hole before the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, MVSU's defense settled in, but TSU continued to capitalize on their opportunities, adding a 20-yard field goal and a 31-yard touchdown pass to extend their lead to 31-0 by halftime. The Delta Devils had a difficult time sustaining drives, managing only 69 yards on the ground and 195 through the air over the course of the game.
Despite the large deficit, MVSU showed resilience in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jaydyn Sisk connected with Kerrick Ross on a 27-yard touchdown pass to finally put the Delta Devils on the board. After a quick TSU response with a 20-yard touchdown run, MVSU scored again with a 1-yard rush from Jakobe Thomas. In the closing minutes, Ruben Lee found Nathan Rembert for a 48-yard touchdown to cap off the scoring.
Mississippi Valley will travel to Beaumont, Texas, to face Lamar University on Saturday, September 7th at 6:00 pm.
