Volleyball Stumbles Against Austin Peay

The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes put forth a commendable effort in their match against Austin Peay on August 30, 2024, at the Larry O. Finch Center. Despite a hard-fought battle across three sets, the Devilettes fell short, losing 3-0 with set scores of 25-22, 25-24, and 26-22.

Set 1: The Devilettes started strong, with Taylor Wooten and Lyric Edwards leading the charge. Wooten recorded multiple kills, helping Mississippi Valley maintain a competitive edge. The set remained tight, with both teams exchanging leads, but Austin Peay managed to pull ahead in the final moments, edging out a 25-22 victory.

Set 2: Mississippi Valley continued to challenge Austin Peay in the second set. The Devilettes showcased solid defensive work, with key blocks from Aniyah Moore and Leticia Franco. Despite their efforts, the set was marred by service errors that allowed Austin Peay to stay in the game. The Devilettes narrowly lost this set as well, 25-24.

Set 3: The final set was a mirror of the first two, with Mississippi Valley fighting to the very end. Wooten and Edwards continued to be the driving forces, supported by strong play from Alaya Rhodes. The Devilettes matched Austin Peay point for point but couldn't secure the set, ultimately losing 26-22.

Key Performances:

  • Taylor Wooten led the team with multiple kills and was a consistent threat on the attack.
  • Lyric Edwards also contributed significantly with kills and key defensive plays.
  • Alaya Rhodes provided solid support with her all-around play, contributing both offensively and defensively.
