Kobe Byrd Picks Off Defense’s First Pass, Bulldogs Dominate T.O.P to Pull Away

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Mississippi Valley State University football program snatched its first interception of 2025 and trailed by just a point heading into the locker room, however, a 21-point third quarter and an Alabama A&M run of 17 unanswered within a span of ten minutes on either side of the half provided the homestanding Bulldogs enough momentum to take down the Delta Devils by a final margin of 45-25.

Delta Devils' Top Performers:

  • Kobe Byrd was the playmaker that turned the team's first interception of 2025 into the opening points of the ballgame, taking Eric Handley's pass back 43 yards in the opposite direction to the AAMU 36, with the visitors putting three points on the board moments later.

  • The pick was Byrd's first in 17 games since transferring from Louisiana Tech prior to the 2024 campaign, adding a pair of solo tackles to his line as well.

  • The ground game scored multiple times courtesy of both Norman Taylor and Natwan Webster's first touchdowns as collegiate student-athletes, combining for 50 yards plus a score apiece.

  • Offensive Coordinator Samuel Parker reached into his bag of tricks for the contest's longest play from scrimmage, a 50-yard double pass from Josh Brown to Mekhi Norris to Evens Valcourt Jr. as Norris now boasts a perfect career completion percentage (1-of-1) while Valcourt Jr. can now claim a new season-long reception.

  • Jalen Wright tallied a MVSU and season-best nine tackles along with his second straight game with a quarterback hurry, Douglas Franklin was not far behind his teammate with a 2025-high eight takedowns, and the trio of Xavier Cannaday (6), Donavin Green (5) and James Bradley (5) all went for personal-bests in the tackles department, Bradley's being a new career-high.

  • Marko Dubak unleashed a massive 64-yard punt for a new long in his Devils debut season, his second boot of 50+, whereas Marko Jovisic improved to 9-for-10 on the year when lining up for field goal attempts, splitting the uprights from 45 and 24.

  • Brown led MVSU in passing and rushing for the third time in five tilts, tossing for 123 yards and a score in addition to a game-most 74 yards on eight rushes with his legs, contributing nearly a first down per tote (9.3 YPC).

  • Caleb Brownlow was the recipient of his signal-caller's scoring strike, the second touchdown of his freshman season, amassing 53 all-purpose yards with 36 through the air and 17 from out of the backfield.
