THE DELTA | Mississippi Valley State University volleyball continued Southwestern Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon, falling to Bethune-Cookman in straight sets, 3-0, inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
The Wildcats claimed the match by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-10. With the result, MVSU moved to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in SWAC play, while Bethune-Cookman improved to 7-7 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
Mississippi Valley State was led offensively by
Aubrie Walker, who finished with a team-high six kills.
Taylor Wooten and
Brooklyn Brunt added four kills apiece, while
Hannah St. Croix
contributed three kills. The Delta Devils recorded 21 kills as a team in the match.
The Valley offense was directed by
Erin Mims and
Kameryn Browne, who each handed out eight assists. Browne also recorded MVSU's lone service ace. Defensively,
Taylor Wilson led the back row with 12 digs, while MVSU finished with four team blocks.
MVSU found its best rhythm during the second set. After falling behind early, the Delta Devils put together a run that included blocks from
Aniyah Moore, Wooten and Mims to pull even at 4-4. Valley remained within striking distance later in the frame, trimming the Bethune-Cookman advantage to 15-13 behind consecutive kills from Walker before the Wildcats pulled away for the 25-17 decision.
Walker delivered three of her six kills during the second set, while Brunt and Moore added two apiece. MVSU posted its best attacking percentage of the afternoon in the frame at .105.
In the third set, Valley grabbed an early 4-1 advantage, highlighted by a service ace from Browne. Bethune-Cookman answered with a run to regain control before closing the match, 25-10. Wooten and Walker each contributed kills during the final frame as MVSU continued to compete throughout the set.
Bethune-Cookman finished the match with 42 kills and a .284 hitting percentage. The Wildcats were led by
Alaya Rhodes, who recorded a match-high 12 kills while hitting .310, while
Moriah Johnson added eight kills on a .615 attacking percentage.
